Two days after the end of the third edition of the Orobie Ultra-Trail® the excitement for a race which saw the whole Bergamo area involved from the town itself to the peaks of the Bergamo valleys is still in the air. From Friday 28th to Sunday 30th July was a triumph of great thrills starting with those of the more than 1500 race competitors.
250 Orobie Ultra-Trail® competitors, 926 Gran Trail Orobie competitors and 404 who took part in the first edition of Bergamo Urban Trail. In addition to the athletes, thousands of people turned out to cheer on those drawing on their last reserves of strength to reach the finishing line in the shortest time possible or simply to get there, right through the day and night.

The thrill of success remained in the air from Sunday 30th July, after the prize giving ceremony at midday in Bergamo’s Piazza Vecchia, the certainty that the goal of organising and following through on a highly complex sporting event - and a unique one capable of engaging a whole area - had been achieved.

No image could better sum this up than that of the Orobie Ultra-Trail® winners, Andrea Macchi and Paolo Rossi: together they sweated and suffered, stretching both mind and body to the limit for the whole 140 km, neck and neck the whole time, before deciding, as if in a gentlemen’s agreement, to cross the finishing line together, preferring a joint victory.

    THIRD EDITION: TOP ORGANISATION
Just a few hours after the end of the event, it is already time to take stock, obviously from the starting point of the feedback of those who experienced the races as well as that of local organisers and the hundreds of volunteers and staff. Thumbs are definitely up, as was clear from the words of the mayor of Clusone Paolo Olini who commented in a packed Piazza Vecchia: “Truly special thanks go to the organisers whose successful organisation of this great event has showcased our Orobie mountains in the best possible way”.

Part of the balance sheet are definitely the dozens of emails sent in by both Italian and overseas athletes expressing the gratitude and emotions felt across the board by those who took part.

And that’s not all: over the next few days a questionnaire will be sent to all those who took part (as it was in the first two editions)  including those responsible for the refreshment points whose goal is to gather immediate feedback from a perspective of continuing improvement. And an analysis of the event in all its ‘sectors’ is also underway.

“The evaluation phase is fundamentally important for every event and this in particular given its complexity. Whilst everything went well our goal is to achieve excellence, optimising both financial and human processes and resources”. Matteo Zanardi, overall event coordinator and manager Orobie Ultra-Trail®.

    (SUPER) RACE CHRONICLE
Running a trail implies a multiplicity of critical points. First and foremost, a route covering a great many kilometres, many in remote areas, requires waymarking which is easily recognisable to athletes. For this reason over 3000 fences and 2000 banners were positioned on average every 50-100 metres, all reinforced with special reflective tapes. Strips printed with the race logo were strung out for more than 6 km and additionally a number of fluorescent lamps for night visibility were stationed along the route and at junctions and especially on the more highly technical sections such as exposed areas and more technically challenging descents.

Staff began work on the route around a month ago, where necessary repairing paths in critical sections above all where snow or minor landslides had modified the route. Large scale path clearance work was done, pruning back vegetation and cutting a great deal of grass, checking and modifying high altitude refreshment points all with the support of a helicopter to identify the landing areas to be used to transport food to high altitude locations and clear litter afterwards.

Weather forecasts enabled an emergency plan to be prepared at midnight on Saturday involving a road bypass in Maresana and a new route from Monte Poieto to the Selvino refreshment point.

Great satisfaction, then, for the whole organisation for this third edition of Orobie Ultra-Trail®: the first race in the world to start in the heart of the Alps and finish in a medieval town – Upper Bergamo - along its UNESCO heritage walls.
